GFI Europe‘s WordPress instance was upgraded from a single site to a multisite WordPress installation. As a result, GFI Europe can now support multiple languages and control content specific to a region.
The first language supported is German (Deutsch) and can be toggled within the top right navigation of the website.
The English website and the German website are treated as their own WordPress instances complete with their own dashboard, pages, posts, and more. The two websites only share themes and plugins, which makes spinning up new versions of the website quite easy for future language additions.
One website is hosted at the domain https://gfieurope.org, while the German site is hosted at https://gfieurope.org/de/. This makes the installation a subdirectory multisite. Future languages like French would be hosted at https://gfieurope.org/fr/.
Since it’s two completely different websites and not strings being translated, content can be curated for the specific region. The websites don’t need to match exactly, and are unique in their own content.
